Public Relations and Promotions Account Supervisor

We seek a versatile communicator who understands media, messages and writing styles. You are potentially qualified if you know the right channels to utilize for a client’s information. Can you write material that is appropriate for print consumer news media, radio, television, trade publications and the web? Can you write a news release, a feature story, an op-ed, an obit? Can you comfortably converse with editors, producers and writers on their level? Do you understand what those various media need – and what they don’t? You would have excellent news judgment, so you could be a counselor to your clients, professionally explaining which messages work, where they work and why they work. Conversely, you sometimes would have to explain to clients why their ideas of what is newsworthy really aren’t. In addition, you would be developing and managing promotions with the media, other brands, and partner organizations in order to increase consumer engagement with our client’s brands.


What You Would Do:

  • Work directly with clients to develop thoughtful communication and media relations plans

  • Work with fellow villagers to fully understand clients’ businesses and the agency’s full marketing plans for those clients

  • Initiate, foster and maintain relationships with editorial gatekeepers in a variety of media

  • Write succinct and appropriate news releases for a variety of media

  • Develop story pitches and successfully execute them

  • Monitor coverage

  • Coach clients on their handling of news media opportunities and inquiries

  • Write advertorial copy that doesn’t read like advertorial copy

  • Serve as copy/content developer and/or editor for publicity and marketing materials, including web sites, blogs and newsletters

  • Be helpful in crisis communication situations

  • Be a client’s spokesperson to the media, and at times be interviewed by print and broadcast media on behalf of the agency’s clients

  • Coordinate news conferences and other media events

  • Serve as copy editor on publicity, marketing, and sales materials generated by other staff members

  • Develop and manage media promotions with specific, measurable goals, such as consumer or VIP events, live remotes, third-party tie-ins, sweepstakes and contests

  • Manages all aspects of assigned promotions from concept to development to execution

  • Act as the internal, client and partner communications center regarding assigned promotional initiatives

  • Work under minimal supervision

  • Intimately understand a client’s business, industry and competition, leveraging that knowledge to help generate new ideas to strategically grow their business

  • Consistently collaborate with team members throughout the work process to foster, facilitate and consistently deliver great work that is on strategy, on time, and on budget

  • Help identify new business opportunities and/or revenue streams for the agency

  • Consistently teach agency and industry best practices to others

What You Need:

  • Five to seven years of experience in media relations and corporate communications

  • Agency experience preferred; media staff experience is a bonus

  • Fluency in the Associated Press Stylebook

  • Solid and diverse writing skills and excellent oral presentation skills

  • Comfort making story pitches and cold calls

  • Ability to recognize story angles and where to utilize them

  • Knowledge of how media function and what motivates their coverage decisions

  • Deep curiosity about a broad spectrum of topics and the ability to learn quickly the business and industry sector of a new client

  • Ability to work collaboratively with clients and bohan team members

  • Experience with MS Office Suite, media databases, presentation software, email and everything Apple

Reports To:  VP/ Public Relations
